Communication has changed.

Some of us remember a time when face-to-face communication (not through video chat) was the dominant way we communicated with each other. The telephone (the one attached to a wall in your home or bolted to a phone booth) was a secondary method for most in their personal lives. A distant third was mail, or snail mail as its called today. We’d rush excitedly to the mailbox when we heard the postal carrier to see if today was a lucky day when we’d receive a card or letter. Usually we’d be disappointed.

Today, we have a myriad of options to communicate. In person communication is important but takes less time in our day than it used to take. Now we are more likely to text, email, video mail (Snapchat, Marco Polo) or call. We are so much more mobile about where and how we can communicate. In theory, we should all have stronger relationships both professionally and personally because the avenues to communicate are myriad and endlessly available. Is that how it works for you? For me, not so much.

Communication is definitely one of those areas where more does not mean more effective, more efficient or more appropriate. One thing is certain, communication is MUCH more permanent than it used to be. Many things we say “face-to-face” is captured by technology, everything we text, email, say over the phone is captured and may be catalogued for later release.

One thing is certain, we much choose our words more wisely than ever before. We must hold back from off the cuff remarks and must evaluate our humor. That doesn’t mean we can’t have fun or be engaged at work. Learning how communication impacts us and how to use that knowledge to advance our organization is key. Give us a call. We can help.
